Dear Friends, Over the past two years, Metro Housing has seen dramatic and rapid shifts in our work because of the massive increase in public demand for our services.  The pandemic added exceptional challenges, specifically the need to accommodate the significant changes to the workflow brought on by the shift from in-person to a hybrid staffing model, and from paper-based to electronic-based applications and other processes.

2022 Impact Report

Metro Housing Help

With the influx of millions of dollars to support housing stability for families with lower income, Metro Housing made a significant impact on the lives of thousands of families across the region. Along the way, we also made significant strides in both accomplishing our programmatic goals and sustaining our organization.

Metro Housing has responded quickly and flexibly to provide program participants better service.

  • We reopened our newly designed office lobby to the public in 2022.

  • We now have staff dedicated solely to direct walk-ins to the best available resources and connect them with the desired staff.

  • Technology upgrades include, thanks to the generosity of the Patrick J. McGovern Foundation, the addition of two Service Kiosks in our lobby that offer a one-stop resource for many needs, including submitting documents, making appointments, applying for housing vouchers, and checking waitlist status.

Covid-19's health and economic impact put housing at risk for many residents in our region.

The state-funded RAFT (Residential Assistance for Families in Transition) program was supplemented by various federal funds allowing Metro Housing to distribute more than $162 million in assistance to more than  18,000 families.

During this turbulent period, the staff of Metro Housing worked closely with volunteers from community-based partners, including the Greater Boston Real Estate Board, Beacon Communities, and the East Boston Neighborhood Health Center, to present workshops and assist hundreds of tenants and property owners complete applications for assistance.

In FY22, Metro Housing continued to administer federal and state funded programs that provided rental subsidies to 11,000 households.

  • This included more than 7,400 federal vouchers such as the Housing Choice Voucher Program,

  • and more than 3,000 via the Massachusetts Rental Voucher Program (MRVP).

With greater stability in the environment and our organization, we have been able to take the time to reflect on lessons we’ve learned through the pandemic. These lessons are the foundation of our recently completed four-year strategic plan (2022 -2026), which is grounded in the dedication to principles embedded in our mission – People First, Housing Always – and is in response to the challenges our organization and our community face.

We intend to prioritize both improving the lives of our participants and at the same time deepen our commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging while building an even stronger organization.

In closing, we wish to thank all of our generous donors and community partners who continue to support our work in ensuring that everyone in Greater Boston has a place to call home.
